A Tribute to Jean Kember – Local Historian
I would like to pay a tribute to Jean Kember who passed away during September 2017. Jean made a huge contribution to local history ,researching the farms of the area and the ancestry of the old families of Glamorgan. Jean had a particular interest in the middle ages and researched deeply into the documents of the period, allowing us an insight to the lives of the local inhabitants.
Jean’s family were descendants of the harpists of the Harp Inn in Gelligaer, where eisteddfodau and meetings of the Cymreigyddion were held. It was a pleasure to hear about the poetry competitions, the musical compositions and the wealth of activities in the Welsh language which was so much a part of the lives of the people of Gelligaer in the past.
Although Jean did not speak Welsh herself she was hugely supportive of the language ,ensuring that it had it’s place in the society which she founded in 2011. The Gelligaer Local History Appreciation Society.Jean’s articles can be found in the above society’s booklets which are published annually as well as in the publications of the Gelligaer History Society. These publications can be found in our local libraries as well as purchased from the above societies.
Jean was a very warm ,friendly and endearing person and her loss will be deeply felt by many, but most of all by her husband Gerald ,her sons and her close family.
